EKF England Kata Youth Team Coach - Aimee Sell

Appointment as National Youth Kata Coach

At the beginning of the year, I started the first of three pilot training sessions for an England Youth Kata squad. A concept put before the Board of the EKF the previous year, it took some before all the approvals were in place and the scheme was given the green light.

The concept was to develop a National Youth Team and have open Kata training sessions for the 10-13 year age group of competitors as the National Kata squad sessions didn’t cater for these categories which just targeted the Cadet, Junior, U21 and Senior categories. My vision was to offer these young athletes a chance to receive elite Kata competition training and within that form a small National Youth Squad which would compete internationally as part of an England Squad. This would provide the foundation for them going forward into the National Cadet squads being better prepared and more experienced for European and World Championships.

I completed the three Youth Kata pilots which were held across the country in the Northern, Midlands and Southern regions, and submitted my final report on scheme in the Summer. I was very pleased to hear that the report was well received and the Board gave me their full support in deciding to adopt the programme at a national level appointing me as the England Kata Youth Team head coach.

This will be a massive boost for England, providing elite competition training for the younger athletes and recognising some of the amazing young talented athletes out there. I cannot wait to get more training sessions up and running and take a squad away on England  international duty.
