Had a great day training at the English
Karate Federation Open Kata Training day held in Barking on Sunday 7th
June 2015. The training day was hosted by Sensei Ticky Donovan
OBE who is head Kata Coach for the EKF.
Sensei Donovan split the attending students into three groups and asked myself and Sensei Reece Taylor each to take a group and focus training on one specific Kata. I took my group through the Shito-Ryu Kata of Paiku, Reece concentrated on Shito-Ryu Anan whilst Sensei Donovan focused on Shotokan Kata with the third group lending his many years of expertise to the students.
Sensei Donovan didn't leave myself or Reece out of the training though as we were assessed ourselves during the break, each performing Chatanyara Kushanku. This gave Sensei Donovan the opportunity to closely scrutinise our performances and focus on the intricate technical parts of the Kata.
After the interval we were back in our groups and the students continued to work on their Kata, and other katas of their choice which allowed me to give some technical feedback to each individual. The group assigned to me worked extremely hard and showed great ability and enthusiasm throughout the day.
It was good to see a many of the regular students attend showing their commitment to the squad sessions and especially great to see a few new faces at this open session too.
I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with a legend in Karate, Sensei Donovan, and using my own experiences was able to help some of the students attending improve their competition Katas. All good for England.
