Female Kata Squad: Natalie, Aimee, Abbie, Melissa

Aimee selected for U21 Kata

The third and final sections for the Junior World Karate Championships took place on Sunday 21st July 2013 held in Ipswich with National Kata Coach, Jonathan Mottram.. Not too far to travel to this venue Aimee arrived shortly before the 10am registration start.

The selections comprised of the final England 'A' Squad candidates with the final few going through to the Junior World Championship selections. After turning 18 years of age in June, Aimee was only eligible for the U21yrs individual Kata category, now being too old for the junior team which successfully won silver at the Junior European Championships back in February.

National Kata Coach, Sensei Jonathan Mottram, organised the anxious athletes into their respective age groups and starting with the male groups watched the athletes perform a number of Katas each. This continued until all athletes had completed at least 4-5 different Katas. The female athletes soon followed the boys and once again each completing a number of Katas in front of the selectors. Once complete the final announcement of the successful 'A' Squad athletes was made to the gathered athletes, Aimee being named in the U21yrs and Senior Female Kata categories, the athletes broke for lunch..

After lunch the final shortlisted athletes for the Junior Worlds selections took place. Once again the athletes performed a number of Katas and team combinations allowing the coaches to observe the interactions of various team members allowing them to select the best possible team.

The coach finally gathered the group of athletes together at the end of a long and tiring day to announce the selected squad.

Aimee was selected for the Female U21yrs Individual Kata event .

This selection now meant Aimee has been selected to represent England at every possible level now; Cadet 14-15yrs, Junior 16-17yrs, Senior 16yrs+ and now U21yrs making Aimee one of the most experienced members of this junior squad.

The full squad is as follows:

Aimee was extremely pleased to be selected for the U21 category and considers it the highest possible honour to represent her country. There is always a higher level of expectation resting upon the athlete’s shoulders selected to represent their country, especially knowing they have been selected over their colleagues and there is immense pressure to perform well, not only for themselves, but also for England and their fellow athletes. Aimee fully appreciates this level of pressure and is fully committed to being the best at these championships.
